PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES OF DIGITAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND RURAL EXTENSION FOR THE STATE OF ESPÍRITO SANTO

Abstract

The digital revolution, which is transforming various sectors of the economy, is also leaving its mark on rural areas by promoting the adoption of digital and information technologies in the production and communication. In this context, where technical assistance and rural extension services play a strategic role in sustainable development, it is crucial to discuss and enhance the use of digital information and communication technologies as tools. This article aims to contextualize and understand the perception of extension workers from the Espírito Santo Institute for Research, Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (Incaper) and representatives of family farming organizations. It highlights their perception of the conditions, advantages, and disadvantages of digital technical assistance and rural extension for the state of Espírito Santo. The study was carried out between April and July 2023 using semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and a participatory diagnostic workshop. A digital questionnaire (survey) was applied to 137 Incaper rural extension workers from 78 municipalities in the state of Espírito Santo. The findings suggest that the evolution of digital technical assistance and rural extension in Espírito Santo should focus on the availability of services that are more accessible, appropriate and tailored to farmers’ needs. This includes improving communication infrastructure, strengthening training for stakeholders, and taking advantage of technologies that are already consolidated in the rural context. The effectiveness of digital initiatives is intrinsically linked to the ability to meet the specific demands of the target population through an inclusive, locally adapted approach. Through this integrated approach, the state of Espírito Santo can make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of rural communities.
